Recently I was on a blog in which a woman was asking people if they had ever thought of writing their own life stories. She further asked if people would be willing to take a survey to help her design a webinar on how to write a life story or memoir. It got me to thinking. What kind of people write their memoirs? Certainly everyone's life is important and interesting. But what drives a person to share that intimate information?
In my case I did write my memoirs, I have not published them and I might never. A Return to Sanity is only a snapshot of a fairly recent development. My true memoirs sit unpublished. Why, because to many people would be hurt by the contents of that particular work. But I get off track, I wrote them so that I could help others perhaps not get involved with nefarious organizations. In my memoirs I showed how a fairly normal child with an ordinary childhood could be duped into joining such an organization.
Now that I sit here thinking about it I think that perhaps it is more simple than I had thought to tell this story. It's simple really, it's all about supply and demand. They offered God on demand and I wanted it, or rather Him. Ultimately they could not deliver on their promises which is why and how I became disilusioned and how I came to my senses. The rest was a disaster but I ended up going home. Where things were not as I would have had them but then again I was now a damaged person.
But who would buy such a simple story? Are memoirs supposed to be sellable to the general public?
What about your memoirs? Why would you write them down? Have you lived a wonderful life, an adventurous life, a fun life... have you seen mighty things or done wonderful things... what would you share with the world or better yet what would you share with your grandchidren's grandchildren if you could? For all the reasons to write a memoir I think that passing on your legacy to your descendants is the very best reason. It's like making a photo album, those are fun as well. They have nothing to do with anyone but you and what you find important and that is what makes them so marvelous!
I have often thought about making a photo album. I have all of the pictures uploaded onto my computer finally. But I suppose that I'm just being lazy. Hmmm... things for me to think about and perhaps you as well. Is it time for you to start thinking of your legacy and what you would like to pass on to future generations?
Be good to each other.
