I've had the last three days off of work. It was nothing special mind you, it was my regular days off as well as the State mandated furlough day in which I don't get paid for a day that I would normally work. It's a nice way of saying that they're taking money off of the top of your paycheck but it's alright because we're going to let you stay at home with no pay.
Anyway since I had the extra time I tried to put it to good use. I have been working diligently on the World Gambit. In this I have found just how difficult it is to write an epic story like Fire & Ice and at the same time how incredibly simple it is at the same time. What I have realized is the story never changes all one needs to do is write the same story from diverse points of view.
For example the story of Michael's Folly, the first book of The World Gambit is about the remnants of humanity as well as the remnants of two other earhly races the Sinarri (elves) and the Dwarves learning how to combat an alien race bent on ruling them. Inside the story are several different stories. One of which is the birth or beginning of a new type of government that includes the Sinarri and the Dwarves as well as the hybrid humans known as Witches. It is also a story of emerging tolerance and understanding between the races and also the birth of a set of twins that will be the focal point of the next three stories. Perhaps you can now see why I originally called the story Birthing Pains? So many things were beginning in this book.
So now I have taken all of these beginnings and looked at them from the viewpoint of all of my characters instead of only a select few. And since I have changed the name of the book to Michael's Folly I have focussed more attention upon Michael and his wife Lena than I had in the original. Next I think that I will focus upon one of Michael's victims, Rosaleen. When I originally wrote the book I had a thought to expand her involvement in things and now I will write that story into the book.
I can only hope that when I am done all of my divergent stories will still be readable as a whole and that they will all make it to a place where they can continue with their story into the next novel. This is fun as it gives me more divergence and more meat on the bone so to speak. The story is fuller than it was only a week ago when I started to write the stories of these otherwise ephemeral characters. I am only about halfway done with it but it is coming along quite nicely.
On another note I have decided to go to the West Coast conference. I need to pay some things off before I start travelling again. But New York is in my plans for next April if I can pull it off.
Be good to each other.
