I think that I have successfully established Lena's personality now. She's not so much the enabler that I had originally made her. She has been transformed into a woman that was given a choice to either sacrifice herself to a man that was abusive and who would eventually become insane or go her own way and perhaps find happiness in the arms of someone else. What was at stake, you ask, I answer; only the world as she knew it.
What was Lena? She was a true Witch, a woman given the power to see the future, but not just a static future, she was given the ability to see the changing future. She could see how each decision that a pivotal person made would or could change the outcome of a situation. So she knew what her life would be like before she ever chose to meet Michael. But she chose it anyway.
Now that I have Lena established I am working on Rosaleen. She is the poor Witch that Michael mistook for the avatar of a goddess. He kidnapped her and imprisoned her. His abuse of her was beyond description and it was Lena that set the wheels in motion for her rescue.
Before her abduction Rosaleen was a Witch of average power that had no real vision for her future. Most Witches died before they turned 25 so there was not much future to envision. But after her abduction and torture who did Rosaleen become? Her capture had set into motion a new dawn for the Witches. Under new management they Witches would know longer lives and hence a chance to dream of a future.
Before her capture all Rosaleen wanted was to live long enough to have a child and enjoy that child for a few years before the govenment took it away. Oddly enough all Michael wanted was a child. He wanted a child with Lena, a normal but Lena had trouble carrying a child to term and a child with her would not be guaranteed to be a Witch. But a child with another Witch like Rosaleen; a Witch child would be assured. Rosaleen had no interest in Michael, but that didnt slow him down when his mind snapped.
This is where I am at now. Rosaleen is in the hospital, Lena is in the hospital. Lena is pregnant and because of better care she is carrying the children and will eventually give birth to my heroes Fallyn and Kiera. Rosaleen had been pregnant when she was brought in but due to her fragile condition the embryos were taken from her, but not killed, neither was she told of them. She, like Lena had been carrying twins that were fathered by Michael. The embryos were taken by the Witches to a man that follows the research of Doctor Joseph Mengele, a man who our own historians are trying to erase from history (that bit is real world truth; try looking him up. I actually had to teach my computer how to spell his name, it should have been a given.) What I'm going to do with those children I have not yet decided.
Rosaleen and Lena become friends. With Ja'nar this is an alliance that will be epic by itself. Lena confides in Rosaleen and tells her what she really is. Now only two people know her secret, Rosaleen and Ja'nar. The three try to create a barrier around Fallyn and Kiera. That much is already set. But I have yet to establish Rosaleen. I dont want her to continue to be fragile but I dont want her to become cold either. I think that I will take a clue from a Joan Jett song, "I'm not good at being subtle but I'm not that strong." I think the carefree Rosaleen that had been looking to simply live her short life as happily as possible will fade into a woman that silently keeps her own council and in doing so appears to be stronger than she is. She will face her fears with a stoic face and pretend that she is not afraid. It is said that if you pretend to be something long enough you become that thing. Maybe Rosaleen can live long enough to become the strong person that she pretends to be.
I will work on her more today. I'll see where she leads me.
Be good to each other.
