My Blog

Yeah, good news!

I am soooo sorry for not updating my blog in the past few days. My excuse is that I came down with a head cold that despite my best efforts screwed me up. But regardless of the head cold, which hit its height yesterday when I was sent home from work with a fever that would not break, I received a call yesterday from a retailer asking about a wholesale price for one of my books. Yes that's right a bookstore called me! How crazy is that?

The bookstore is in Dayton, for those that don't live in the Great Basin area, Dayton is just outside of Carson City, our State Capital. At any rate this man that owns the bookstore is such a colorful man. He is a Psychologist by trade and owns a bookstore for a hobby. He has acted in several films and is a personal friend of the Producer of those films, a woman who's name is familiar to many. He is also personal friends with several other stars that reside in the area. All of this information came up as we talked about how surprised he was to always find such talented people that lived in this area. And get this... he was talking about me! Despite my stuffy head I couldn't help but have my head grow just a bit bigger for a moment.

I am back to earth today. The call was monumental for me and I of course offered him a fair price on one of my titles in hopes that when I deliver to him the books that he ordered I can pitch some of my other titles. Because he is a Psychologist my book A Return to Sanity immediately comes to mind as well as Veteran of the Silent War. Also I was thinking that since he is a local store perhaps he would carry my cookbook, A Taste of Mexico. Oh... what book did he want? Poems by Martha. The man that commissioned that book is also friends with several of the same people as this shop owner and he is always out pitching the book. He has lots of time, since he is retired and he knows a lot of people.

To say that I'm excited about this breakthrough is an understatement. When the books come in I am going to Dayton with my friend to deliver them and then we're going to go around and meet some of his friends and perhaps sell some more books. Why am I not dropping any names? There not my names to drop yet. I haven't even met the Psychologist yet. Never fear, when I meet them I will let you know.

In book news, having read the final novel on The Wheel of Time, I am reminded of what I am trying to avoid in my book. My friends at work who also read the series thought the same thing of the final novel, it should have been two. The entire last battle that it took 20 years and 15 books to reach was rushed. This novel was written by a famous and respected author. So what does that tell me? That anyone can rush a book. Perhaps he felt that he wanted to be done with the series because it wasn't really his. Perhaps Robert Jordan's fans were overly critical of him and he deliberately ignored so much in the final book because of it. I don't know, what I do know is that I do not want any of my novels to feel rushed, it would be a disservice to my fans and my characters.

Speaking of doing something that is a disservice to my characters... I was reading along in my novel and realized that I had deliberately written this book to have a second book. This is a huge taboo in novel writing. A book must be able to stand alone. So I had to ask myself, what exactly is Michael's Folly about? Is it just book one of a series? Is it just introducing characters? It can't be either, it must have a story of its own. So I went back and started reading from the beginning to see if what I had so carefully written and constructed actually did follow a single story line... and thank the Lord it did.

Michael's Folly is about the last vestiges of sentient life on earth learning how to work together, overcome prejudice and fight a common foe that does not fight like anything they have ever seen. At the same time it is about a man who loses his fight with sanity and exists for only one thing, to have a child no matter the cost. This man, Michael turns everyone's existence on end in his quest for that child.

So now, I am near to the end of my rebuild of this book and I wish to get back to it. Please remember the Zombie run and the MACA in a city near you. And of course... Be good to each other.

I precisely wanted to thank you very much once more. I do not know what I could possibly have carried out without these suggestions documented by you directly on such a theme. It seemed to be an absolute horrifying setting in my opinion, but encountering a specialised technique you processed it took me to leap over joy. I am just grateful for the information and hope you are aware of an amazing job that you are doing teaching many people thru your website. Most probably you have never got to know any of us.
